This past week sophomores in chemistry focused on how efficient various form of antacids were in relieving heartburn and indigestion. Students started off the week by reading about the health affects of heartburn and how antacids can help to relieve it in the body. Students then performed an inquiry-based lab that allowed them to see which antacid would help to relieve heartburn the fastest. Students tested the following: Pepto-Bismol, Tums, Alka-Seltzer, Pepcid, and Rolaids. They tested the antacids by using Pepsi as a model for the human stomach, since it has a comparable pH.
