slider-boys-and-girls-clubThe Clemente Union League Boys and Girls Clubs 21st Century after-school program here at Roberto Clemente Community Academy has started off the 2015-2016 school year with great success. Students participating in the after-school program have been able to take part in fun and engaging activities ranging from creating art or playing chess, to recording and creating music. The Clemente Boys & Girls Club offers engaging and academically-enriching programming to all members. The participating students have been able to build new friendships that have resulted in a fun and engaging after-school experience. Being able to have a place where students can interact and engage in interesting activities is something that many of our Club members look forward to when coming to after-school programming. Freshman Joshua Acosta has been a regular member of our Club this school year, and has been participating in World Media Club as well as Clemente Cooks Cooks. He says, “The Union League Boys & Girls Club is a great place to be because it lets me be who I am while getting to know new people and getting help with my homework. It’s a great place to have fun doing things like cooking and learning how to use the nice professional cameras.” Being able to offer new and engaging opportunities to all our club members will continue to be one of the main focuses of the Clemente Union League Boys and Girls Club this school year. A listing of current club offerings can be found below.

Triple Play – Gym

Triple Play – Gym offers students the opportunity to play basketball in the morning while building positive relationships with other youth and staff. Being able to have fun playing their favorite sport allows for the youth to expend energy before class, build teamwork and leadership skills and arriving earlier to school to ensure being on time for their first class of the day.

Triple Play – Weight Room

Triple Play – Weight Room provides students with a safe place to exercise and learn about a variety of exercise-related topics such as anatomy, proper weight lifting techniques, personal goal setting and nutrition.

Clemente Cooks

Clemente Cooks focuses on three primary categories: kitchen fundamentals and safety, cooking methods and techniques, and healthy eating. Students are taught everything from how to properly hold a knife, to how to prevent cross contamination, to knead dough and tenderize meat. As always, we promote healthy lifestyles by teaching Club Members healthy alternatives to popular dishes and healthy nutrition.

Media Club

Media Club gives our students the opportunity to express themselves creatively while gaining hands-on experience in media production technology (a unique and effective approach to teaching STEM concepts). Without the pressure of strict deadlines for project completion, students are able to write their own screenplays, produce short movies/newscasts and much more.

World Media Club

The World Media Club is a program focused on the digital arts. World Media Club gives our students the opportunity to express themselves creatively while gaining hands-on experience in media production technology (a unique and effective approach to teaching STEM concepts). The students who participate in the WMC are able to join specific Labs tailored to their interests—the different labs create unique individual projects and then join together in collaborative projects. The Club Members have the opportunity to create photo galleries, blogs and videos, and music. The ultimate goal of the WMC is to create students that are more globally minded and knowledgeable of the world around them through digital art.

Homework Help

Homework Help provides one-on-one academic assistance as well as a safe, relaxing and positive environment in which students are able to complete their homework, catch up on missed assignments, and receive the overall support and attention needed to ensure that the Club members feel safe and supported.

Girls Can We Talk

Girls Can We Talk is a program dedicated to building strong Lady Wildcats! We offer a wide range of fun activities—everything from arts & crafts, field trips, fundraising goals and cheer and dance teams. We are also strongly rooted in mentoring and journaling, and serve as a place where all participants can come an express their successes and struggles of their day and offer help to other young ladies who may be experiencing the same thing.

Anime & Art Club

In Anime club offers opportunity for club members to have a fun and safe place to discuss the newest and most popular animes with students who share the same passion for anime. Students participating in Anime Club have the opportunity to “run the show” by being the lead and deciding which anime movie to discuss. Students are able to help and critique their art work with professional pens, inks and sketch books provided to all students. In Art Club the focus is to improve the artistic abilities of our members. Having a place outside the normal instruction offered in class is a fun way for students to use this time for their own studio work. Having access to acrylic paints, clay, and other art supplies allows our members to have the opportunity to create beautiful works of art.

Diplomas 2 Degrees

Diplomas 2 Degrees, a nationwide program developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s, provides a range of college readiness activities to guide Club members as they work toward high school graduation and prepare for post-secondary education and career success.
