Decision Day 2015

Decision Day 2015

by Ashley Munive

decision-day-2015 4This past Wednesday, seniors at Roberto Clemente Community Academy celebrated Decision Day 2015. All seniors who committed to a postsecondary plan (including universities, colleges, the armed forces, and career and technical schools) announced their decisions to their peers in a special ceremony.

As part of the all-day events, students enjoyed workshops with topics such as entrepreneurship, banking and credit, College 101, and Life after High School. In the banking workshop, volunteers from community banks such as Byline Bank, MB Financial, and Bank of America helped answer student questions about responsible banking. Students learned how to open a bank account and how to safely build credit.

In the College 101 session, the class of 2015 met with current college students (including some recent Clemente graduates) to learn about what college is really like. They shared their college experiences, including their struggles and successes. Meeting with them really opened my eyes for college expectations.

After the workshop sessions, seniors celebrated with their third quarter Awards Ceremony recognizing seniors’ achievements. Teachers nominated seniors for awards in each of the IB Learner Profile categories (Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced). Seniors Michael Calhoun and Sierra Young served as the MCs for the ceremony, which included a performance by Clemente’s dance team and a slideshow of photos from the last four years.

In just 37 school days, the Class of 2015 will be graduating from Roberto Clemente Community Academy and then preparing ourselves for our first year of college. To think that in just a few months our lives will completely change is a scary but exciting fact. Four years have flown by so fast, but I’m ready to become the adult I know I can be!
