Who was Roberto Clemente?
Roberto Clemente was a Major League Puertorican baseball player who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972. You can find more information about him on the web or in books. Two of the most important facts about Clemente's life are:
1. He was instrumental in bringing the Pirates to win the World Series;
2. On New Year's Eve of 1972, against the pleas of his wife and friends, he boarded a plane full of relief supplies bound to Nicaragua's earthquake victims and died during the trip. He insisted he go because he had heard reports that supplies were not getting to the people who most needed them. For this, he is revered as a hero for Puertorican communities around the States and in his own country.
