E-mail Print PDF

Pedro Martinez WinnerPedro Martinez, wrestling for Clemente High School, won the Chicago city championship this past weekend at Chicago State University at 152 lbs, becoming the first ever in the history of the school.

His current record is 28-0. Pedro has enjoyed tremendous success due to his committment and determination on the mat. Last season, Pedro was All City Winner as the 145 lbs runner-up. His sophomore year, he finished fifth. Currently, Pedro is the top seed in the state qualifying regional topurnament scheduled for this saturday at St Patrick High School.

He is also the top ranked wrestler in his weight class in the sectional qualifier, which ultimately sends the top four wrestlers to Champaign, Illinois for the state tournament. We are hoping Pedro will become the school's first state qualifier in history.

Congratulations to Pedro Martinez for representing Clemente High School.

Ms. Baxter and Mr. Stephenson's English 9 classes had the unique opportunity to meet the the novelist and playwright Ayad Akhtar.  Mr. Akhtar is the author of the play the 9th grade students have been working on in relation to The American Theatre Company's MOSAIC Theatre Project.  The play explores personal identity through the lens of the experience of an American with an Islamic background whose past and present collide in an explosive manner, affecting his personal and professional life.  Mr. Akhtar, whose novel "American Dervish" will be released along with the world premiere of the play "Disgraced" this spring, was generous enough to come and share his experience as a writer and Muslim American.

Alex with the other panelists and Bill KurtisAlex Velazquez, a third-year TV/Media Production student, was one of only five students city-wide to be selected to represent young adults in a symposium on Youth in Media at NBC studios in downtown Chicago.

As a panelist, Alex answered questions from Chicago\'s media legends, Bill Kurtis and Carol Marin. Before and after the taping, Alex had the privilege to mingle with Mr. Kurtis, and Ms. Marin and speak about his media experiences.

Alex did a great job representing both Clemente and Community Television Network, where he has worked as a paid intern over the past two years.
