World Studies Completes Human Rights Research Project

Slavery ended with the Civil War. Or did it? Unfortunately, slavery still exists along with other human rights abuses. After studying similar abuses such as mutilation and torture during the war in Sierra Leone, students became curious about other issues and how the world, specifically the US, responded to them. So students set out on a full research project to inquire more about how the US responds to issues such as modern slavery, human trafficking, apartheid, and genocide.

Each student chose an issue he/she wanted to further investigate. Then, over the course of four weeks, students worked through their research project finding sources, analyzing information, and drawing conclusions. Finally, students put all they learned together into a full research paper. Not only have Clemente’s freshmen empathized with others and examined the decisions world leaders are forced to make, but they have developed the skills necessary for continued academic success
