Celebrating Our Commitment to Service at WE Day!

Team 10 web story pic 4.30For the past 5 weeks, Clemente sophomores have been bringing school’s recycling program to life. Every day during 8th period, students collect paper and cardboard from every classroom and office in our 9 floor, 2 building campus. In just a short time, our students have collected over 980 gallons of recyclable materials!

As a result of accomplishing this amazing feat, 22 sophomores were chosen to attend WE Day Illinois on Thursday, April 28 at Allstate Arena. This event brings students from all over the state together in celebration of their service, compassion, and leadership in their schools in community. The day included celebrities, inspirational speakers, and student performances. Speakers included Martin Luther King III, Paula Abdul, Boston bombing survivor Adrianna Haslet-Davis, JR Martinez, and Monique Coleman. Students enjoyed performances from Nico and Vinz.

That wasn’t all! Throughout the arena, interactive kiosks allowed students to complete challenges that allowed them to display their care and compassion towards other communities around the world. Upon completing each challenge, students earned 1 of 4 pins. This became our mission! Students Amari Rios, Keishla Vega, Isabela Alvarado, Lolito Lindsey, and Aaron Delgado visited every kiosk and completed all 4 challenges to earn all 4 pins!

After a day of inspiration and reflection, our sophomores came back to the school where they dedicated their time towards improving ready to be leaders for their peers. Tickets to WE Day cannot be purchased; they’re earned. With the successful revival of our school’s recycling program, our dedicated sophomores not only earned entry to WE Day, they moved one step closer to continuing to be the change needed in our world.
