Take Me Out to the Ball Game

img_2833“Over five years of persistence and partnership with the Alderman and the Mayor’s Office, has paid off for our students both academically and extra-curricularly. As an IB World school our neighborhood students deserve a world-class curriculum alongside world-class facilities. We are excited to break ground later this spring on the athletic field our students and community deserve.”
-Principal Dr. Marcey Sorensen

On Wednesday, October 26th, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno, and Chicago Public Schools unveiled its plans for a brand new athletic field including a baseball field, practice field, and multipurpose field that supports other many other sports and clubs at Clemente. This plan was shared with parents, students, community members, and staff who all shared in the excitement and joy that these improvements will bring to Roberto Clemente Community Academy. Architectural renderings include turf fields, a new public address system, scoreboard, lighting, as well as bleachers, dugouts, and a new press box. Principal Sorensen said “The addition of a new baseball and multipurpose field just adds to the amazing progress that Clemente has made over the past five years including achieving a 2+ on the CPS School Quality Rating Policy and becoming an IB World School. The consistent support that Clemente has received from Alderman Moreno, Chicago Public Schools, and the Mayor’s Office has made all of our progress possible and has really allowed the vision of excellence for neighborhood schools to become a reality!”

The entire Clemente community would like to thank Alderman Moreno and Mayor Rahm Emanuel for their consistent support of our school. Over the past 6 years, there has been a unwavering level of support from both the Alderman and the Mayor and we know that without their belief in the leadership of Dr. Sorensen and her team, the teachers, staff, community, parents, and of course the students our progress would not be possible. We are grateful and we will continue to make you proud. It is a GREAT day to be a Wildcat!
The school’s namesake, Roberto Clemente once said, “[w]hen I put on my uniform, I feel like the proudest man on Earth.” These new fields will now match our first-rate teaching and learning facilities allowing our students to feel a similar dignified excitement both in the classroom and on the field.
