What is International Baccalaureate?
International Baccalaureate (IB) is a world-wide educational programme that prepares students for university level work, while also developing them as critical thinkers and active participants in their local and global communities. Beyond academic preparation, the IB’s mission is to create a better world through education. This philosophy is captured in the Mission Statement of IB:

“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. ”

Does this mean that Clemente is no longer a neighborhood school?

Absolutely not! While we do have students applying to enroll at Clemente from outside our attendance boundaries, we are still admitting all neighborhood students who would normally attend Clemente. Our goal is to be a comprehensive neighborhood high school, able to serve all of the diverse students in our community. All freshmen and sophomores are part of the IB Middle Years Programme. Both neighborhood and application students have the ability to enter the honors track in 9th grade, preparing them for the IB Diploma Programme. Additionally, we plan to meet the needs of all students by offering multiple pathways in 11th and 12th grade, including the IB Diploma Programme, IB Career-related Programme, and traditional Career & Technical Education. The principles of the IB Learner Profile and curriculum framework will infuse all classes at Clemente, ensuring that every student benefits.

Academic Pathways at Clemente
All 9th and 10th grade students participate in the IB Middle Years Programme, consisting of instruction within the IB framework, community service, and the Personal Project. An honors option is available for those who are ready for accelerated coursework in preparation for the IB Diploma Programme.

During their sophomore year, students will choose from various pathways for completing their education at Clemente:

Diploma Programme: a comprehensive and challenging pre-university program for academically advanced and highly motivated students in grades 11 and 12. Students will take 6 courses, as well as the IB Core: a Theory of Knowledge class, the Extended Essay, and the Community, Service & Action project.

IB Career-related Programme: a pathway that offers career training in either Culinary Arts, Broadcast Technology, or Allied Health, while providing the opportunity to take 2 Diploma Programme courses and the IBCC Core. Starting in Fall 2016, JROTC will also join our CP offerings.

IB Subject Certificates can be attained by students who take individual Diploma Courses and test successfully at the end of their senior year.

IB Honors Pre-Diploma Application Process – Class of 2021
Eighth grade students who qualify for IB will receive Eligibility Letters from their counselors, which contain a PIN number that students will use to register for information sessions and apply to schools online. Clemente is using a cut score of 440 this year, and we invite all interested students who exceed that score to attend an information session. We are unable to offer spots to students who do not attend an information session, so please make sure you show up! When applying online, families may select an information session at any IB school, but we encourage you to choose one at Clemente so that you can tour the facilities and meet some faculty members afterward. Our IB information sessions are scheduled for:

TBD

The application and session-scheduling process opens October 1 at 9 a.m. at: https://apply.cps.edu/ Eighth grade students who are enrolled in a private, parochial or elementary school outside of Chicago can take the NWEA test to determine eligibility, free of charge. For more details, please visit: http://www.cpsoae.org/ Please note: Students who live within our attendance boundary are not required to apply for general school admission, but should fill out an IB application if interested in joining the Honors cohort.
